Birkenhead Street Angels is a Christian-led project helping to make the streets of Birkenhead town centre safer. Piloted from December 2024 to March 2025, the project aims to support vulnerable people in the evening and nighttime.

The project was initially funded by the StepUp Fund; a public health and shared prosperity fund to assist local organisations in the delivery of their programmes which align with and support the Councils Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

In December we created the project by co-designing, implementing and evaluating a ROC Angels supported project with night-time economy partners and the faith community in and around the Birkenhead area. This involved engaging community stakeholders and the public, designing the project, developing the set-up of the project and recruiting and training volunteers.

Upon completion of the pilot in March 2025, Street Angels Birkenhead commissioned a University of Chester evaluation into the project. The evaluation not only gives a great insight into the outcomes, challenges and community response to Street Angels Birkenhead so far, but also offers an exploration into how to further the programme and its potential for growth. Since the pilot was completed, Street Angels Birkenhead has seen around 25 new volunteers join and has undertaken 28 shifts, helping around 100 individuals in vulnerable situations. From handing out flip-flops and lollipops to administering first aid and signposting people, Street Angels Birkenhead is really making a difference, as one community member said “Street Angels is important, it adds value to Birkenhead”.
